8th Grade Social Studies
The Eighth Grade Social Studies Program: United States History This course uncovers the roots and formation of our nation and society. Students will study and explore events, issues and topics from the first humans to enter North America across the Bering land bridge to modern day topics including current political events and civil rights issues. Students review and expand their knowledge of Native American cultures, the Age of Exploration, European contact and colonization of South, Central and North America, English colonial life, the American Revolution, the U.S. Constitution and formation of our representative democracy, westward expansion, slavery, the Civil War and Reconstruction, and 20th Century events which helped form our national identity. Woven throughout the year is the critical thinking theme that there is always more than one side to a story, and the importance of "reading between the lines" to uncover the mosaic of experiences, cultures and viewpoints that make up our diverse nation. » read more...
